5 Things You May Not Know About LASIK

We speak to many patients about LASIK surgery every day. And we are always surprised by how much many people don’t know about LASIK. Even though LASIK has been around since the mid-90’s, many people still know very little about it.

Have you been considering LASIK but held back out of fear of the unknown? Perhaps you just need a little more education about the procedure and what it entails. Here are five things you may not know about LASIK:

It’s not that scary

It’s normal to feel afraid of having surgery performed on your eyes. But LASIK really is not as frightening as it sounds. And choosing a surgeon with the right experience will do a lot to put your mind at ease.

It’s an incredibly safe procedure

Many people hold off from having LASIK because they are afraid of possible complications. The truth is, your risk of complications is less than one percent. This means you have a 99 percent chance of being thrilled with your results! And on the off chance that there are complications, they are usually minor and can be fixed during a follow-up procedure.

LASIK is painless

LASIK is a very quick, painless procedure. The actual surgery itself will probably take less than 30 minutes. And your doctor will use eye drops to numb your eyes prior to surgery. You may feel some slight pressure during the surgery but you won’t feel any pain.

The recovery from LASIK is short

Most people assume that surgery automatically equals a long recovery time. So many of our patients are surprised by how short the recovery from LASIK actually is. Most patients begin feeling better within a few days of the surgery and can resume their normal activities within the first week.

There is a blade-free option

Traditional LASIK is performed by using a tiny, oscillating blade to create a corneal flap. However, in 2003 a blade-free LASIK option was introduced. The femtosecond laser eliminates the need for the blade. It is much more precise and eliminates the vast majority of complications. At Stahl Eyecare, we are proud to offer FDA approved iLASIK to all of our patients.
