LASIK Myth Busters – “LASIK Is a Luxury I Can’t Afford”

The myth of a high cost procedure is unfortunate, preventing people whose lives could be greatly improved by LASIK from walking through the door. Well, forget what you’ve heard, because LASIK doesn’t have to cost a fortune and will save you money in the long run.

The national average for LASIK surgery is $1,657 per eye, that means you’ll be paying $3,314 for a complete surgery. When considering the procedure, it’s important to take into consideration what’s behind the cost, and why some offices charge significantly more than others.

Owning the Laser:
The biggest expense for other doctors is the cost of the laser. LASIK lasers and equipment can cost upwards of $600,000, so most doctors opt for renting time at another facility. This can cost between $1,400 and $2,000, a fee directly passed on to you. We own our own VISX Star S4 ActiveTrak™ Excimer Laser System, lowering the cost of our procedures.

Co-Management Fees:
If a doctor doesn’t own their laser, they’ll often charge up to $1,000 as a co-management fee for referring you to a center for vision correction, a premium you’ll be paying. Because we do all of our procedures in office, you won’t have to worry about hidden fees.

Size of Practice:
As a general rule, the smaller the practice, the more expensive. Like any business, doctors pay overhead. Larger practices like ours, with a bigger staff and higher volume of patients, can offer lower prices without sacrificing quality.

Flex Spending:
Many insurance companies offer Flex Dollar or Flex Spending Accounts that an employee may split between eye, ear, and dental care. In most cases, these funds expire at the end of the year. We accept Flex ranging from a small amount to the full cost of procedure, so come in and use them before you lose them!

CareCredit:
CareCredit is a low interest credit card that may only be used for medical expenses. This is a minimal cost way to pay for your LASIK surgery, as most financing plans include zero interest for the first year. Because we accept CareCredit, you can repair your vision now and take your time to pay with no additional charge.

If you are in need of vision correction and wear contacts or glasses, concern over price should never prevent you from exploring LASIK surgery. After the procedure, you’ll never purchase new glasses, lenses, contacts, solution, or schedule yearly screening appointments again, and LASIK will pay for itself in as little as fifteen years.
